Opportunities

NEWP is rapidly expanding. We welcome inquiries from prospective postgraduate students interested in applying systems engineering, process design, optimization, and computational methods to MPhil or PhD research in any of our research areas.

This page provides information on joining the NEWP Lab. Prospective PhD applicants can find information on potential research topics, making an inquiry, funded studentships, and life in Cambridge. This page also contains information for visiting students and information on available postdoctoral positions when available.

Prospective PhD students

Doctoral projects at the University of Cambridge approach intricate challenges through creative problem-solving and rigorous, hands-on research.

The Department of Engineering’s PhD programme offers students the opportunity to engage complex engineering problems while developing the practical and analytical skills needed to communicate and implement sustainable solutions. NEWP welcomes inquiries from motivated students interested in exploring creative approaches to complex engineering problems at the water-energy nexus within a collaborative supervision environment. Our group welcomes projects which address critical issues in sustainability in energy and industrial systems, electrochemical and chemical energy storage, wastewater valorization, desalination, and integrated low-carbon solutions for real-world impact.

Areas of focus for doctoral research with the NEWP Lab

Our group is well situated to incorporate projects at the water-energy nexus which intersect our research areas. Potential topic areas might include:

  • Sustainable energy technologies and power systems
  • Electrochemical energy storage systems
  • Microgrid and grid-scale energy solutions
  • Hydrogen and water-energy systems
  • Desalination
  • Wastewater valorization
  • Decarbonization and industrial sustainability
  • Supply chain optimization
  • Life cycle analysis
  • Efficiency modelling

Funding

EPSRC studentships and other funding competitions are posted periodically on the NEWP Group blog and on the University of Cambridge’s jobs site (usually crossposted with jobs.ac.uk).

Visiting students

The NEWP Lab can accommodate visiting postgraduate students.

The NEWP Lab hosts a limited number of visiting postgraduate researchers who seek to engage in focused, high-impact research within our group over a shorter period of time. Visiting students remain enrolled at their home universities while contributing to carefully defined projects which align with our work in sustainable water and energy systems. Their time in Cambridge is structured by close academic supervision, integration into active research initiatives and social circles, and engagement with our broader academic and industry networks. The NEWP Lab seeks projects motivated by a desire to improve environmental health, social outcomes, and industrial sustainability. Prospective inquiries should communicate real-world relevance and a commitment to academic rigor. Students are encouraged to initiate a conversation about their interests and where they may benefit from supervision within our lab.

Life in Cambridge

The IfM

The IfM and Department of Engineering strive to offer a welcoming, supportive place for postgraduate students to grow within an exciting, fast-paced working environment. Though the above video describes the student experience in the undergraduate course in the Department of Engineering, the foundational emphasis on problem solving to continue into the culture of the postgraduate level.
This talk by IfM Director Tim Minshall speaks to many of the connections the NEWP group aims to explore:

Inquire

To start the conversation about applying for a postgraduate research program, students are invited to review our lab’s research areas and potential supervision areas and direct letters of inquiry and current CVs to:
